COWI Hungary Consulting and Planning Ltd. has been at service of its clients in the area of environmental protection since 1999, in the area of transportation since 2002. In January 2004 COWI Hungary has attained the quality assurance MSZ EN ISO 9001-2001.
As a Hungarian member of the COWI Group is focusing on environmental protection and transportation consultancy, economics and financial analysis, policy, planning and legislation on the basis of its wide experience in Hungary and in Central and Eastern Europe.
In the domestic market our clients are mostly ministries, public administrative bodies, municipalities, but the economic organisations, enterprises are also present in growing rate. Within our international works the EU Eastern-European research and development projects and the CIS governmental projects have to be emphasized.
The COWI Hungary consist of 42 permanent employees, mainly qualified as agro-environmental, transport engineers, economists but among the professionals geologist, programmers can be also found.
In all the area of the environmental protection - especially in connection with the protection of groundwater, remediation, waste management - our firm traditionally deals with strategic, economic, judiciary, institutional and informatics related tasks. We took part in the substantiation and development of several environmental legislation, strategies and had main role in important developments for the environmental section at the area of information technology (Waste Management Information System, Information System for the Implementation of IPPC, underground water related projects).
Within our most important international projects we have developed the methodology for national environmental financial strategy, including the assessment of environmental costs, the exploration of the existing sources and the development of the financial strategy based on the methodology (EU, PHARE, TACIS, EU 5., R+D projects, etc.).
In the last two years our environmental activity has widened. COWI Hungary has been entrusted by the project management of the project elaboration work in Hungary, leaded by COWI A/S, which prepared the distribution of ERFA resources. Besides the project management work, COWI Hungary participated in the elaboration of certain projects as well. The management consisted of more than 20 companies cooperating which was a big challenge and also involved many possibilities for our company. The aim of the elaboration of the project from the Hungarian government side the effective use of the ERFA assistance of the period of 2004-2006. The budget of the project is 16 million euro. In the framework of the program 130 project were elaborated, and 737 expert co-operated.
The goal of the contract was to transform the project proposals into project documentation, including the preparation of the complementary working documents which should be also attached. All of these documents are needed in order to get the financial assistance of Operation Programs (in this case mainly EIOP) financed by ERFA.
Due to the project elaboration work, COWI Hungary has now more employees getting special environmental-technical knowledge and/or qualification as Chartered Environmental Auditors. They gained relevant experience in the field of privatization, phase I, II audits, environmental reviews, assessments in English. Their current studies include projects concerning tourism and traffic development, sewage and waste management projects, studies and plans demonstrating environmental effects.
Through the assessments of the environmental effects the employees implement dispersion modeling of air pollutants, noise and risky materials with the help of the proper technological tools and experience. COWI Hungary has close cooperation with technological and environmental firms of the country, which has an important role in the future in case of multidisciplinary projects.
The transportation segment of the firm deals with traffic-planning mainly. This special knowledge can be combined with the knowledge of environmental branch, e.g. in case of the preparation of noise maps and feasibility studies of transportation investment projects with the environmental assessment analysis.
The effectiveness of our activity is maintained by the available modeling, analyzing, GIS softwares and environmental, social-economic databases, developed and used methodologies.
