The European Commission has approved the first major transport project in Hungary, the construction of tram line No. 2 in Debrecen. The elaboration of the project was led by COWI Hungary Ltd.
The project aims to improve the quality of the urban public transportation services, to increase the share of public transportation in the overall traffic as well as to reduce environmental load. The development improves daily travel for at least 100 000 inhabitants in Debrecen and the surrounding area . The implementation of the project will establish a public transportation connection with higher service standards between the Northwestern part of the city and the city center.
Within the framework of the project 7.8 km of new tramline will be constructed for tram No. 2 with 12 stations equipped with facilities for the disabled. Moreover, 18 new trams will be procured also with disabled access.
The investment costs of the development of tram line No. 2 amount to approx. HUF 18 billion . The construction works start in 2009 and will be completed in 2 years . The new tramline will operate from 2011.
